Developed and launched by Fireproof Games in 2012, The Room is a mobile mystery game which features a well-locked safe, and your goal is to get that safe open.
What type of game is The Room?
There is always a fine balance in most of the great puzzle games to make the process even challenging and logical. The Room applies this rather flawlessly, as it generates puzzles that take off simple introductory tutorial way in Chapter 1 and get more and more complex with every next level unlocked.
The puzzles itself feature a variation of motions, and at times, it can be fitting together the right pieces, searching for keys or figuring out a sequence that will uncover something else.
The gameplay of The Room
The Room is a three-dimensional puzzle fantasy, where a player is informed by letters of a hidden box in a room in a house. As the player solves the mysteries around the box, more notes from the corresponding author are found, explaining the box’s use of an ethereal material called “Null”, as well as dispensing the author slowly descending into madness.
A game makes the story more detailed than that, but The Room’s storyline is its least interesting aspect. The fun comes from hours of puzzles and challenges required to break open the safe, coupled with the game’s amusingly creepy ambience.
At the start of play, the player is given with the first of four puzzle boxes where the first box is offered as a tutorial to the game’s control, which shows how to go around the box and interact with features of the box.
The player in the game has a small inventory for items such as keys located in compartments in the box. A key inventory element is a unique lens that, in-game, enables the player to view things made from the Null element that compose parts of the box.
The lens, in The Room, can generally be available at any time to see the game’s secrets, often requiring the player to manipulate the view to adjust mysteries into a coherent sign. The goal is to fully unfold each puzzle box, extracting a smaller yet increasingly complicated box within it.
There’s a lot to talk about The Room – puzzle mystery game. The first thing you’ll notice is that the ambience mentioned earlier: The game’s visuals are excellently drawn; the faux three-dimensional room–and the safety it features–look great, and are fun to explore.
The soundtrack as well as the sound effects set a mood not quite of terror, but something entertainingly off-putting about the experience: why is this safe so tortuously locked up? What the heck is it protecting?
