Runtastic is an Austrian mobile fitness app that combines traditional fitness with social networking and parts of gamification as a logical regression to the Quantified Self movement.
The Run & Mileage Tracker, along with its suite of exercise-tracking mobile apps, is perfect for all fitness levels. To its core, the app is a fitness tracker, not a fitness coach. Therefore, you’ll find no beginners’ lessons on it. For example, the push-up application tells you how to use the app, but not how to do a good push-up.
The app does offer instruction on doing exercises so that it can track them, or you can touch your nose to the phone so it can count your pushups, say–but that’s all.

It should probably be obvious that an application called “Runtastic” is designed primarily for runners. This app, however, is created, more precisely, for trail runners, Central Park Joggers, marathon racers, and other people who like run outside, or perhaps on an indoor track.
How do Runtastic works?
The app works by tracing your run workout from your mobile device’s GPS. What this means is that if you’re pushing indoors on a treadmill, Runtastic will not track it. Let’s say, you went for a 25-minute run on a treadmill, and then uploaded the app’s stats to your Facebook account. Within seconds, you may receive a comment from your younger brother: “.15 miles in 25 minutes…fail.”

Features of Runtastic
Runtastic is probably the best running app in the Android App market. Even if the user interface doesn’t seem “native” to the iOS world, the layout is intuitive, clean, and easy to interpret at a glance. Here is what it looks like mid-run:

The Run & Mileage Tracker updates everything in real-time. These updates include your map, your average pace, your current pace, your distance, and your duration. The Premium version of the app also has auto-phase, which alerts when you’ve finished running and automatically puts tracking on hold.
As a free service, Runtastic is useful for distance runners. But its principal app doesn’t have a built-in pedometer, so it’s not that ideal for people who are a short runner (or drivers, or cyclists). A pedometer can be purchased for $1.99, but other fitness apps, like Striiv, offer a pedometer feature for free.
