A multi-platform free software BitTorrent client, Popcorn Time is a free alternative to subscription-based video streaming services like Netflix.
Popcorn Time uses the sequential downloading technique to stream videos that are listed on several torrent websites. Third-party trackers can also be added to the application, manually.
Following its production, Popcorn Time quickly received mostly positive media attention for its ease of use compared to Netflix. After this surge in popularity, the program was eventually taken down by its parent developers on March 14th, 2014, due to intimidation from the Motion Picture Associate of America (MPAA). Since then, the program appeared on a new website, “Popcorntime.sh.”
What’s the key functionality of Popcorn Time?
The Android version of Popcorn Time has an interface that presents thumbnails and film titles in a manner pretty similar to Netflix. Lists of media on the program can be browsed or searched by genres or categories.
Every time a user clicks on one of the titles, the media gets downloaded via the BitTorrent protocol.
As with other BitTorrent clients, as early as Popcorn Time begins to download a film, it also begins to share the downloaded content with other BitTorrent users. It continues to do so until the selected media deleted that happens automatically once the application is shut down or closed.
Is Popcorn Time Legal to Use?
This program is an open-source streaming service, allowing its users to watch movie online for free. A free service is no doubt appealing, but, of course, you may wonder, “Is Popcorn Time legal?” Well it depends, i.e., the software/program in itself is not illegal, but the way you use it most likely is.
