The Uber of South East Asia, Grab is a fast growing service for ride-hail services, food delivery, and courier services. It’s working in a number of cities across Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and other countries in the region.
While Grab was certainly inspired by Uber, nevertheless, it has made various adjustments to the local needs.
Ever since Grab acquired Uber in South Asia, it has turn into the dominant and often only ride-hailing service in the region.
Procedure to use Grab App
1- Download & Sign-up:
This application comes in a variety of different languages, so it’s recommended to download it in an English language country (like the Philippines and Singapore) unless you’re a local.
Signing up process can be a bit of hassle, i.e., if you’re planning to get a local SIM card for your mobile phone, then you better sign up after you have a local number. In case, you’re using EU or US sim, try signing up with an email address rather than the phone number. This is because delivering needed validation code to foreign numbers can be problematic.
2- Payment methods:
The default way to pay in Grab is cash. However, you can add a debit or credit card to make payments as well. This was no concern in Singapore or the Philippines, but in Indonesia, Grab wouldn’t allow you to store a credit card, instead of forcing you to use your wallet service OVO.
The best way to use Grab in Indonesia is by downloading the app and entering a credit card!
3- Payment charges:
It’s recommended to store only one card for Grab’s payments because the company will charge a little amount for each credit card you store.
4- Ride booking:
Booking a Grab is similar to Uber, with your departure point is by default based on your GPS location, but you require to verify the correct pickup spot. This rid service utilizes multiple points for large buildings, only to ensure you have the right exit to avoid problems.
5- Choosing your ride location:
You can select your destination by typing in the search box or tapping on a specific place on the map. Some of the frequently used destinations are showing up prior to type in.
6- Picking a car of your need:
Grab offers regular GrabCar, which are deemed to fit four people, but can have tiny subcompacts with little trunk space.
If you’re a bunch of people or have multiple pieces of luggage, you can upgrade to a GrabCar+. You can also go for a GrabTaxi, which is relatively an inexpensive option to utilize. Also, you can select GrabShare, for a shared ride with other riders.
Once you choose a vehicle, now you need to verify your payment choice, provide any promotion code, or enter a note to the driver, for example, “I’m waiting in the hotel lobby.”
7- Advance booking of a Grab ride:
If you need to ride in an upcoming day, you can schedule a booking for the needed time to make sure that you’ll have a ride and don’t have a long wait.
Once you provided the details, Grab will assign a driver and inform you of the driver name, license plate, car, and driver rating. You better take a screenshot of the assignment, so you have all that information saved.
If you are familiar with Uber ride-hailing, Grab will be easy to use as well.
